WRE54G Wireless Range Extender Reviews

Good signal strengthGood, compact design
Doesn't work well with Macs

If you have a Mac laptop, in my case a Powerbook G4 running OS-X 10.4, I suggest you stay away from this device. I actually have mixed feelings about it. The setup program works well, and the device configured to my wireless network with little difficulty. My G4 saw the device, but was unable to get an IP address using DHCP. I spent over an hour in a chat session with Linksys tech support, and that was followed up by a call from a supervisor there who spent another hour with me. One thing which was (finally) suggested, which also appears in various forums, was to manually configure an IP address in System Preferences --> Network. Apparently this works for some, but it didn't for me. I'm returning the device. So why are my feelings mixed instead of all negative? (1) The level of (attempted) support was outstanding, especially since Linksys doesn't always get good marks. (2) The device does a great job with my wife's PC laptop running Vista. It just doesn't work well with Macs. Linksys knows this and has corrected the same problem with early models of its wireless routers (I use one and the Mac sees and can use it, but with an extremely low signal, thus the need for an expander.) I don't understand why they can't fix this guy! If you're a Mac user you're better off with the Belkin 5FD-7132 which you can usually buy for less. It has an annoying tendency to drop its connection to the router occasionally, but at least it works most of the time.

compact, has Linksys logo
documentation, customer support

I thought I was ready for this product, having installed many Linksys devices in the past and having 4-5 very detailed steps from others who have done this. They were right. It's really tough to get this installed on the first pass. I called the 800# as suggested, and that was extremely frustrating; dozens of questions about my wireless router, and suggestions that I'd need to sign up for router support (@ $$ / hr) .. when I didn't have a problem with my (Linksys wireless) router, it's been working great for years. It was over a 2 hour call to resolve an issue that was fixable in 5 minutes! I've only had this installed for a day, works sorta, but it still doesn't cover the intended distance well, I'll reposition and raise it and hope that it will at least deliver on the promised function.

Works very well.
Difficult to setup.

Have installed 2. Setup is very difficult. Included instructions are not helpful. You should get alternative setup procedure from various internet posts. However, Linksys Tech Suppport was quick and helpful.

Couldn't find any
connectivity and customer support

It increased signal level significantly, but couldn't work with my exhisting network. Called support line, talked to two different techs with poor Indo-English and finally found out that it is not compatible with Belkin Wireless Routers!

Good signal when working
Needs to be rebooted (unplug/plug in) every few hours

When it works the network strength is excellent. However, after leaving it running for a few hours the throughput decays to near zero. I've found unplugging the unit and plugging it back in fixes the problem. Also, some days the wireless devices can't "see" the extender. They end up connecting to the primary router which has a low signal (thus this purchase) which ends up getting poor throughput. The odd part is that other devices will see the extender and it is not alwasy the same units (I have 5 wireless G PCs and "toys" at the house). It is like they are playing DHCP musical chairs. Again, unplug the extender & plug it back in and all is good for another few hours (8h+ on a good day).Mine is going back to the store. Going to go with another brand in hopes of avoiding the plug/unplug cycle. :/
